"No More Diapers" Update

It has almost been 5 months since, Hunter declared "No More Diapers" and he meant it. He had a few accidents at first, but it didn't take him long to figure it out. He rarely has an accident at night, so it likely won't be long before he is night trained too.

A year ago, I could have never imagined how thankful I would be that he is potty trained and well.

Last spring Hunter began to have digestive issues that gradually got worst. By May it had gotten to the point he was having issues daily resulting in accidents. We removed eggs from his diet (he has a mild egg allergy and we had reintroduced eggs a few months earlier), but he didn’t improve.

In June we tried eliminating milk too (his pediatrician thought he may be lactose intolerant). During June we saw some improvement, but in July he got sick again. We tried putting him a strict egg free, dairy free and gluten free diet, but still saw no improvement.

I had myself convinced that Hunter was seriously ill and had something type of severe food allergy/ intolerance or bowel disease. At this point, we felt helpless. I admit I didn't have a lot of faith that he was ever going to be well again.

I began to journal everything he ate, hoping to find a pattern, but there was none. With the help of our pediatrician we were able to get him into a pediatric gastrologist with only a couple weeks wait. It normally takes 3 months.

In August we spent a lot of time at OU Children’s. He had several test done (x-ray, celiac panel, blood work, etc.) and they all came back normal. We were relieved, but still worried because he was still not “normal”. Plus he had lost two pounds in August. Since there appeared to be nothing seriously wrong with Hunter, his doctor sent us home for a month and had us experiment with his diet. Right around the time we started the high fat diet, is when Hunter gave up diapers. For the first time in months, he no longer had digestive issues.

Five months later and he is still well! He is no longer on a high fat diet and can eat dairy and wheat. We are also excited that he appears to be outgrowing his egg allergy. At his 3 year well visit in November his test results came back 1.00 (they were 3.00 at one, and 1.96 at two). Anything greater than 0.35 is considered an allergy.

Up until a couple weeks ago he was wearing his underwear backwards so he could see the characters. Luckily he has a tiny bottom so they fit both ways.

He likes to find his clean underwear in the laundry pile and fold them.

The causes of his digestive issues are still a mystery. Although we suspect it may have been somewhat self-induced since he can go hours without having a potty break and prefers to potty at home. There is still a possibility that it was the eggs, so we are only allowing him egg products on special occasions, which he appears to be tolerating.

That is SUCH great news! And I hope you intend to show Hunter the underwear pics often as he gets older. :)
